Fact
- As a customer, you pay a deposit of DKK 5 if you choose a reusable cup for your to-go-drinks. The deposit is automatically returned to the customer's payment card when it is returned to one of the system's set-up deposit machines in Aarhus Midtby.
- In Aarhus, approximately half of the waste that is collected from the city's bins and thrown on the street is from takeaway packaging. In particular, many to-go cups and beer mugs are left in the city.
- Disposable cups are among the 10 most common types of plastic found in Danish nature. They are typically made of plastic or plastic-coated cardboard and are used on average in just 15 minutes, after which they become waste.
- Disposable cups made of cardboard most often consist of cardboard and plastic foil (PLA-liner), which is difficult to separate. Therefore, disposable cups can rarely be reused. One reusable plastic cup can lower the emission of CO2 by more than 70 per cent, compared to a disposable cup. When we reuse our to go cup, instead of throwing it away after a short period of use, we also avoid producing a lot of waste.
- The attempt to establish a circular system that can handle takeaway packaging in the urban area is a few steps ahead of European legislation on Extended Producer Responsibility in 2025 (SUPD Directive) and supports it national target of 50 per cent reduction of certain plastic takeaway packaging by 2026.
